Common Household Problems

I have no hot water
My storage heater is not working
My storage heater is too hot
I have no power
My tap is not running properly
My tap is dripping
My smoke detector keeps going off

I have no hot water
Have you switched the immersion on in the tank cupboard?
If you have more than one immersion, is the correct one switched on?
If you have a boost switch, try turning it on.
Check that the trip switch on the fuse board is set to ON.
  NOTE: If the trip switch frequently switches itself to the OFF position, contact the Association as soon as possible.

My storage heater is not working
Is it switched on at the wall?
  Although the switch is in the on position, the red light does not stay on continuously.
Check that the trip switch on the fuse board is set to ON.
  NOTE: If the trip switch frequently switches itself to the OFF position, contact the Association as soon as possible.

My storage heater is too hot
Have you recently turned down the heater settings?
  The heater may take up to 24 hours to cool down properly. Check again later.
  NOTE: All storage heaters have a safety cut-out which stops them becoming dangerously hot.

I have no power
If you have a card meter, does it have any credit?
  If it has run out of credit, you can use emergency credit until you buy more, by pressing the button. See the Scottish Hydro-Electric meter guide for more information.
Do your neighbours have any power?
  If not, then there is probably a power cut in the area. Call Scottish Hydro-Electric for more information.
Check that the trip switch on the fuse board is set to ON.
  NOTE: If the trip switch frequently switches itself to the OFF position, contact the Association as soon as possible.

My tap is not running properly
If it is the cold tap, have you recently turned off the mains supply?
  If so, the mains stopcock might not be turned back on properly.
If it is the hot tap, have you recently turned off any stopcock in the hot tank cupboard?
  If so, the stopcock might not be turned back on properly.
Try replacing the tap washer.

Try replacing the battery.
  Smoke detectors beep intermittently to let you know that the battery needs replacing.
