Low Cost Home Ownership Properties - Scalloway

Hjaltland Housing Association’s continued investment will provide home ownership opportunities

Hjaltland Housing Association is nearing the completion of yet another affordable housing project, with this particular development offering a unique opportunity for those seeking to take their first step on the property ladder. Whilst 26 of the 32-unit development will be reserved for social housing, to be advertised in early summer, six units have been earmarked for sale and are soon to be advertised.

Working in partnership with The Scottish Government, the new properties at ‘Berryview’, Upper Scalloway, will offer a gateway into property ownership for those who would not ordinarily be able to afford to purchase their own home without additional financial support.

Under the New Supply Shared Equity Scheme, prospective owners can purchase a property at a significantly reduced rate. Successful applicants may only need to fund 60% of the property valuation, with the remainder being covered by The Scottish Government through a shared equity agreement.

Ian Bray, Head of Housing & Customer Services, said;

‘The buoyancy of the local property market is well documented, proving a step too far for many members within our community. In particular, we hear on a daily basis of the struggle for first time buyers, and we are therefore excited to be able to facilitate this support for aspiring homeowners.

This project will offer an alternative housing option for those on a low to medium income who may traditionally struggle to secure a mortgage and compete on the open market. ’ Ian Bray HOH

The properties available for purchase include:

  • 2 x one bedroom, two-person ground floor flats
  • 2 x one bedroom, two-person first floor flats
  • 2 x two-bedroom, three-person houses

Viewings by appointment will be held on Thursday 23rd February 2023, where Association staff will be on hand to answer any queries and hand out application packs. Interested parties can book an appointment slot by phoning the Association on 01595 694986.

Applicants not able to attend a viewing, but would like to be considered, can phone the Association and request an application pack be sent out. All completed applications must be submitted to the Association no later than Friday 10th March 2023.

In addition to the development in Scalloway, the Association is working across Shetland to provide affordable housing for our communities, with new build projects on the ground in Brae and Aith, soon to be followed by a 4 property project in Walls.
