Self and Custom Build Housing Pilot Challenge Fund

The Self and Custom Build Challenge Fund has been established to support projects which can deliver innovative housing models that contribute to increasing housing supply through self and custom build (SCB) in Scotland. Submissions are sought for pilot projects that demonstrate and promote the value of SCB as an alternative mainstream housing delivery model.

The programme has a total budget of £90,000, and the Scottish Government is looking to provide grant funding to support a range of pilot projects, from small-scale to large-scale. The maximum grant likely to be awarded to any one project is expected to be in the region of £20,000-£30,000.

Funding will be allocated depending on the size, scope and development needs of each pilot project and subject to its potential to provide outcomes which will support the expansion of the sector.

The Scottish Government will consider projects in the following categories:

  • Planning and site/plot delivery
  • Marketing
  • Skills and training
  • Volume and construction
  • Other innovative ideas for SCB

The programme is open to all sectors. Applications are welcomed from those proposing projects which will demonstrate an innovative approach to the delivery of homes, from small-scale and individual, to community projects and ideas to support the scaling-up of the custom build sector.

Launching the programme, Housing Minister Kevin Stewart said:

"Our custom and self-build challenge fund is now open to support projects that will help planning departments develop ways to better respond to the needs of people undertaking a custom or self-build home."
