Calling all "Budding" Gardeners - Free Gardening Starter Pack

April 22nd 2021

This summer could see a hive of activity in gardens and windowsills alike, as Hjaltland Housing Association announces a new initiative in partnership with Transition Turriefield, the food producing collective based in Sandness.

Tenants of The Association will be offered the opportunity to benefit from the expertise of the Turriefield team, with tailored advice and support, enabling them to experiment in growing their own foodstuffs.

The project will cater for all, from beginners through to experienced growers, with a hope to inspire the next generation of budding growers. In recognition not all tenants have access to a garden; there will be a focus on what can grow on a windowsill, with support every step of the way. Furthermore, starter packs will be made available for any household interested in the concept but not sure where to start.

Penny Armstrong of Transition Turriefield; ‘We are very pleased to be working in partnership with Hjaltland Housing Association as part of our Grow Shetland project. This will be an exciting opportunity to support new and experienced growers to produce more of their own food.’

Tenants will be encouraged to share their progress via The Association’s Facebook and Instagram pages, and the project will culminate in a light-hearted competition at the end of the summer.

Head of Housing & Customer Service with Hjaltland Housing Association, Ian Bray; ‘This is an exciting project that will benefit our tenants, build their confidence and introduce new skills that can potentially lead to a more sustainable, more affordable food source. At a time when there is increasing pressure on household budgets, along with a drive to reduce food miles, this feels like the opportune time to offer this support.’

Any tenant wishing to be involved in the project can register their interest with The Association, and should do so by Friday 7th May 2021. Tenants can register for a starter pack, or simply register to receive advice and input on existing projects. The Association can be contacted on 01595 69 4986 or mail@hjaltland.org
